Geraldine Ellen (nee Matthews) Scheiferstein, 91 of Amherst, passed away Thursday, July 20, 2023 in Amherst surrounded by her children as they expressed their love to her in her final hours She in now happily reunited with her husband George who passed away August 17, 2017 along with her parents Bill and Ida Byrd Matthews, and her sister Maxine Shoup. As gracious and happy as she was in her earthly life, she will remain so in our memories. Jerri was a naturally giving, caring, and kind person.
Jerri was born in Barberton and was a 1950 graduate of Lorain High School where she met her future husband of 65 years George W. Scheiferstein. She was one of the brightest students and most liked (definitely by George) in her class. After high school, Jerri pursued her nursing degree and attended Cleveland Metropolitan School of Nursing where she made many lifelong friends among her peers. She and George married in 1952. Soon her nursing career took a back seat to her full time job as a homemaker and the beginning of her life raising her five children; Jeff (Cindy), Dann (Susan), Kevin (Jennifer), Kelly Waldon (Tom), and Suzanne Parker. She put her skills and compassion to work by being the unofficial neighborhood nurse and later volunteering for years at the Children's Development Center in Amherst. Her true calling was being our Mother and she was a great one. She encouraged our abilities and strengthened our weaknesses in her subtle way. Another chapter in Jerri's life began when her kids were grown and she launched a business for nutrition counseling in Beaufort, South Carolina near their home on Fripp Island. She quickly established a devoted clientele who loved her for her encouragement and thoughtful advice. She was adored by her 13 grandchildren who always knew she was a special person in their life and 24 great grandchildren. Although our mother wasn't particularly athletic, she was a devoted fan of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Her favorite hobby was reading good books, as she always had one nearby. She was her children's spiritual leader and we have all followed her on our own paths. Jerri will always be loved and fondly remembered for being an exceptional wife, om, and grandmother. We will miss her.
Private services were held July 28, 2023 at Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain with a Celebration of Life following with all of the immediate family.
