George Schuman Jr. Obituary

George E. Schuman Jr., age 91 of Lorain, OH, formerly Amherst, OH, took Jesus’ hand on Sunday, January 14, 2024.

George was born on September 4, 1932 to George Elmer and Nora (Hattabaugh) Schuman at Monon, IN. He attended school at Wolcott, IN graduating in 1951. This is where he met his highschool sweetheart, Doris Wagner. They were united in marriage October 18, 1952. George had gone to Chicago, IL and was hired as a clerk on the Pennsylvania Railroad. He continued to advance in supervisory positions with Penn Central and Conrail, retiring in February 1990 as Train Master at Fairlane Yard, Lorain, OH. 

He retired from the US Army, having joined the Indiana National Guard in 1949, and served twenty years. He earned Jungle Expert Rank in the Panama Canal Zone under the training of Green Berets. ​

Since moving to Amherst, OH in 1970, George was a very active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he served as an usher/greeter and facilitated many fundraisers and events. George enjoyed fishing on his boat, the Rusty Rail with family and friends. He never met a stranger and leaves behind beautiful memories.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Doris (nee Wagner). George was immensely proud of his family. He was a devoted husband and father of six children. James of Rockport, TX, Diane Robinson of Wilmington, NC, Larry (Kristine) of Lorain, OH, Mark of Corpus Christi, TX, Tom (Deborah) of Amherst, OH, John (Laura) of Elyria, OH. Preceded in death by daughter-in-laws Shelley J. Nelson and Cynthia Schuman.

He enjoyed his six grandchildren William (Lisa) Robinson, Matthew (Emily) Robinson, Kristina Schuman, Tom Schuman II, John J. Schuman, Tiffany Schuman and one great grandson, Kashton Schuman.

George was preceded in death by an entire generation of Schumans. His parents, brothers Jack and Robert, sisters Lois and Mary Jane. Survived by sister-in-laws Pearl and Delores, many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank Western Reserve Hospice for their excellent care. 

Family will receive friends Thursday, January 18, 2024 at the
Garland-Misencik Funeral Home, 851 Park Avenue, Amherst from 4-8 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m., Friday, January 19, 2024 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Amherst with Rev. Timothy O'Connor, pastor officiating.  Everyone please meet at church for the mass.  Military rites will be conducted following mass.  Interment will take place in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Remington, Indiana. 

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations in George’s memory to St. Joseph Church, 200 St. Joseph Dr. Amherst, OH 44001 or Friends of Murray Ridge (Special Olympics) 1095 Infirmary Rd. Elyria, OH 44035.
