Obituary

John Byron Telatnik Jr., age 93 of Lorain, passed away on Monday, December 11, 2023 in Amherst. John was born February 15, 1930 in Lorain to the late John B. Telatnik Sr. and Elizabeth (nee Pathe) Telatnik. John was a hard working man who deeply loved his family.  He was a graduate of Lorain High School Class of 1948A and went on to graduate from Western Michigan University in 1952. John proudly served in the United States Army from 1952-1954.Throughout his career, John worked as a carpenter and later became a dedicated teacher at Clearview High School from 1960-1970. He then taught at Irving Junior High School from 1970-1988. John also owned Vinyl Sales Company with his brother Bob. During the summers, they applied vinyl siding with help from John's son Chad. John was inducted into the Lorain Sports Hall of Fame for his pitching skills with the 1957 National Tube baseball team. The team won the National Amateur Federation Championship that year.  In 2017, he was inducted again for his track and field achievements by holding the high jump record of 5'11" from Lorain High School, a record he held until 2017. In his free time, John enjoyed visiting with his grandchildren, playing racquet ball, and fishing for yellow perch. John is survived by his daughter Shelley Kelley and his son Chad (Dawn) Telatnik. He also leaves behind his granddaughter Rio (Isaac) Anderson, grandson Nolan Telatnik, and great grandsons Talan and Chastin Anderson. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mauvereen (Sherry) Mumford Telatnik whom he married June 7, 1958, his brother Bob Telatnik, and his son-in-law Ralph P. Kelley. A special thank you to his niece Jean Sears who helped so much with his care. John Byron Telatnik will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all of those who had the pleasure of knowing him.  His memory will be cherished forever. A casual Celebration of Life will be held at the Garland-Misencik Funeral Home, 851 Park Avenue, Amherst on Saturday, January 6, 2024 from 1-3 p.m.
