OBITUARY

MARY L. HOUSTON

Mary L. Houston (nee Callender), age 85, of Sheffield Lake went home to be

with the Lord on Saturday, March 25, 2023 at her daughter's home in

Vermilion, who was her caregiver.

 

She was born on December 30,1937 in Creighton, Pennsylvania to the late

Laird and Lucille (nee Stuck) Callender. She was a 1956 graduate of Edfra

High School in Creighton, Pennsylvania.  Mary was married April 29,1957 to

Kenneth E. Houston and moved with him to Ohio in 1960. They resided in

Sheffield Lake since 1971, moving from Cleveland.

 

She proudly managed an apartment building along with her husband for eight

years prior to moving to Sheffield Lake. Mary was a devout wife and

homemaker and a faithful servant of the Lord who did foster care and was a

day care worker at First Baptist Church in Sheffield Lake for ten years with

the four year old class. She enjoyed writing poetry over the years which she

shared with everyone, it was her testimony that she gave to other people.

Mary was a member of the Church of the Open Door, Elyria.  Through her

church, Mary founded the "Hat Ladies Ministry" in 2008.  The ladies

regularly visited the infirmed at nursing homes.

 

Survivors included 3 daughters: Ruth Coleman of Vermillion, Patti (Lenny)

Hanson of Portage Lakes, Susan Houston of Sheffield Lake; seven

grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth E. Houston (2019), her

son-in-law Randy Coleman, and her three brothers Robert, Alvin, and George

Callender.

 

There will be a Celebration of Mary's life at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 1,

2023 at Church of The Open Door, 321 Lear Road, Avon Lake.  Pastor Jason

Russ will officiate.

 

Memorials in Mary's honor made be made to the Church of the Open Door.
